Grandma Rose had two days of excitement this week in 1977 – a neighbor’s family drama and then frightful weather! Of course, she gardened… how ever did you guess?  I was noting how much chicken noodles she makes and I swear, our fondness for the dish must come down the line honest because my mother makes them, and I do too because my son Noah cannot get enough of them.  It’s one of his (rare) favorite meals.  I bet he could eat a pot all to himself throughout the day easily.

From The Circleville Herald, Thur, 14 July 1977, pg 1, col 3.

NOTE:  As always, I left her spelling, capitalization, and punctuation as much as possible.

July 9, 1977 – Got up 8:40 – Replanted 2nd row of beans, pulled some grass from potatoes and dusted them. Saw a few beetles and some leaf hoppers.

Boy! What a day!! Brenda came rushing over, wondering if they could come over and stay for a while Roger had threatened to kill her mother & Judy. He broke into the house. Sheriff got there after he’d left but they got him later – now in jail. Hearing Monday.

Len and I spent afternoon in garage where it was cooler. I took a nap in lawn lounge for couple of hours. Len couldn’t stand it in the trailer.

July 10, 1977 – Got up 8:00 Couldn’t sleep in like I wanted. Messed around outside for a while. After breakfast cleaned bath room mirrors. Cooked chicken for supper and put homemade noodles in the hot pot for supper – Took nap in afternoon for two hours.

Thought Rosie and Darryl might come – He likes chicken noodles, but no one showed. Len feeling better, tho seems tired.

Pulled some grass from the potatoes after supper. Some of the beans in flower bed are turning yellow.

July 11, 1977 – Got up 8:00  Going to wash but ended up going through the junk drawers – removing everything so I could use the drawer for plastic lids.

Carol and Judy came over to tell us details of Rogers hearing and to use the phone – No washing got done.

Poured rain in afternoon and had to shut up green house – and house windows quick. When the second rain came, I decided to take a nap from 4 to 5:15. After supper when I went out to “shut up”, I pulled some weeds from bergamot in front flower bed.

July 12, 1977 – Got up 8:30  Transplanted a few violas and separated Josephs coat while waiting for Len to get up. After breakfast did some hand washing and hung it in the garage. 14 panties, half dozen blouses, three pr. Lens pants, 2 pr. mine & 2 pr. my shorts, 1 pr Lens P.J., Lens blue wind breaker.

July 13, 1977 – Got up 7:30  Wrote and sent letters to Mom H. and Ethel. After a lunch of breakfast food, Len and I went to the garage – Hot in the trailer. Did all my ironing and folded panties –

Thundered in the distance and the storm began about 4:00 P.M. Len and I barely made it to the house.

Never have I seen such lightning or heard such thunder. Water covered the blocks in the breeze way. One flash of light was too close for comfort. Hail fell in big gobs – also hail the size of golf balls. Lasted for bigger part of an hours. Len and I huddled in his big green chair. Even after the storm stopped, the hail kept peppering the trailer. Paper said 3″ of rain in less than 20 mins. Laurelville knee deep in water.  (see above for said news article)

July 14, 1977 – Got up 8:30 Ethel called wondered how we fared during the “big hail storm.” Len went to garage to keep cool and to cup up apples for me. Got about 3/4 bushel off the ground at Johnsons.

Brenda came over to mow – mowed half the side yard. Got too hot, so she came back and finished in the evening.

I pulled more weeds and set out 3 more tomato plants. Weeded beans in flower bed and set out seven or eight mum plants in front of the beans in the flower bed. Came in about 9:00 P.M.

Franks hedges are rooting finally. Lost several.

July 15, 1977 – Got up 8:00 Pulled up all old pop corn stalks and cute down weeds in old last years garden. Took Len to garage after breakfast, doing his foot and cleaning exhaust fan above stove.

Froze 3 whip cream containers, and 1 pt. apple sauce from apples Len cut up yesterday. Cooked apples Len cut up today & ran them thru the mouli. Will freeze tomorrow.

Got good supper – creamed peas and potatoes, and broiled fish. Len too sick to eat. he felt better around 7:30 so Judy took me to Tarlton to grocery.

10:45  Still 84°  No air whatsoever.  92° today Tho porch thermom said 97°
